Cold chain: protecting Medjool quality

Why controlled handling and storage matter from farm release to destination.

The useful storage question is not simply “How long do dates last?” It is “Which fruit, at what ripening stage, in which pack, under what conditions?” Keep the labelled storage instructions and the agreed batch specification with the product throughout its journey.

01

Match the storage plan to the product

UC Davis identifies cultivar, moisture and temperature as important factors in date quality and storage life. Its date factsheet notes that soft cultivars such as Medjool behave differently from semi-soft varieties. A general date-storage figure is therefore not a shelf-life guarantee for your pack.

Ask our team for the storage conditions and date information that apply to the particular product. A soft seasonal Rutab pack and a fully ripened Medjool family box should each follow their own instructions.

Research context on date quality and storage. Follow the instructions and shelf-life information for the actual pack or agreed shipment.

02

At home: make the pack instructions easy to follow

Read the storage and date information when the order arrives. Keep the pack closed as instructed, use clean utensils when serving, and ask the team if the label or delivery condition is unclear. Individual wrapping is a serving format and does not replace the pack’s storage guidance.

For a larger family box, plan how you will use it before ordering. Choose a pack that fits your household and the storage space you have, rather than choosing on price alone.

03

For trade: agree each handover

Write the storage and transport conditions into the order specification. Identify who controls the fruit at collection, during transport and clearance, and at the receiving warehouse. Agree how temperature information, batch identity and receipt condition will be checked.

  • Before release: confirm the batch, pack condition and relevant date information.
  • During transit: use the agreed handling plan and retain the shipment records.
  • At receipt: check the shipment against the order and record any concern promptly, before onward distribution.
